The American Kennel Club sponsors two types of events
for retrievers -- field trials and hunting tests. Field
trials are competitive events where dogs are placed 1-4 and titles are
earned based on points received from placements. Hunting tests are
non-competitive events where dogs are judged against a standard and earn
titles by receiving passing scores. Additionally, many breed
associations sponsor working certificate tests that show a dog's
instinct.
